MICROFILM: |
|
The use of microfilm has become widespread from its beginnings
in the mid 1800s. In 1870 the French used carrier pigeons
to send thousands of messages over enemy lines during the
Franco-Prussian war. By the middle of the twentieth century,
microfilm systems had been developed for the large-scale archiving
of business documentation, and have since been used by thousands
of organisations.
Due to the density of information stored on microfilm, the
base material has to be highly transparent and dimensionally
stable; and above all, free from flyspecks that might obscure
vital data. Special grades of polyester are manufactured to
be free from any impurity that might intereere with the recording
of diazo micro-images.
Initially promoted as a space-saving medium, microfilm has
discovered its best attribute for the 21st Century; its longevity.
The legacy from decades of producing microfilm is that many
documents archived fifty years ago are still readable today.
There are no concerns about platform changes or software upgrades.
The lifespan of microfilm is estimated at 500 years by Kodak,
given optimum developing and storage conditions. Some poorly-developed
microfilms (often a product of in-house filming) have resulted
in images fading, tarnishing the reputation of microfilm for
long term storage. However, filming and processing to recognised
standards ensures a lifespan of 100 years, regardless of storage
methods.
