SAIL MANUFACTURE:
|
|
No matter whether it’s on a dinghy, wind surf,
yacht, or racing boat, the sail, the “engine” of
the boat, is a total work of art comprised of material and
design,
refined
and extended through skilled work – in short, precision
down to the last detail. Today’s sails are state-of-the-art
products, tailored to the exact needs of ship owners. Nowadays
high tech dominates both the manufacture of the canvas and
the making of the sails themselves. A look at the manufacturers ’offer
and the names of the fibers – including nylon, polyester,
aramid, and carbon, to name but a few – shows just
how large the product range is. Laminated sailcloths, in
which several
layers are glued together, include polyester weaves which
are glued to both sides of polyester films. Such sales combine
the advantages of films (dimensional stability) with those
of fibers (robustness,simple handling).
